HR must take leading role in combating stress

The results of an exclusive survey, Stress in the UK Workplace, by Personnel Today and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), show that the majority of HR professionals fear the problem is set to become even worse.

More than half (52 per cent) of the 700 senior practitioners who responded believe workplace stress is on the increase, compared with just 7 per cent who said it was decreasing.

Furthermore, 83 per cent believe high levels of stress are damaging the UK's attempts to bridge the productivity gap with its main global competitors.

The stress epidemic is also hampering HR's day-to-day effectiveness, with 60 per cent claiming that stress is harming staff retention, and 27 per cent citing that perceived levels of stress damage recruitment efforts.
